Irving Wein
But let’s backtrack for a moment, to the humble beginnings of Irv’s Luggage. In 1947, with help from his Army savings, Irving Wein bought his cousin’s luggage shop. After purchasing the store located in the Logan Square neighborhood on Chicago’s northwest side he renamed it The Progressive Trunk & Bag Co. Using his strong merchandising and customer service skills developed over the years, and with many long hours of hard work, the business thrived. Irving’s strong work ethic was exemplified to his customers when he would personally deliver large steamer trunks on his back riding a Chicago streetcar.
For the next twenty years The Progressive Trunk & Bag Co continued to prosper; however, it became evident in the late 1960’s that more and more people were moving to the suburbs; and with this movement came the birth of a new retail concept “the shopping mall”. Owing to Mr. Wein’s business ingenuity, he knew it was time to make a change; even when many told him it would be a mistake.
Mr. Wein opened Emporium Luggage in Yorktown Mall in 1969. Setting up shop and competing with the corporate giants, Carson Pirie Scott, JC Penny, and Sears, made Mr. Wein a pioneer of sorts amongst the smaller privately owned luggage retailers of his time.
Over the years, Irving married and had three children. Mr. Wein knew it was important to instill in his children the very important work ethic that allowed him to not only survive but thrive in his new country. Under the combined efforts of his wife and his three children, Irving’s company grew, diversified and evolved with the changing needs of the consumer marketplace. Irv’s Luggage entered the eCommerce world of the Internet in 1998. The founder, Mr. Irving Wein, died in 2007 but his legacy of hard work, customer service, merchandising and business acumen lives on in his children.
